Installing an energy storage system helps you prepare for PSPS events or other outages. Your battery will use stored grid or solar energy to keep your home running when grid power is disconnected.
When there are potentially dangerous weather conditions in fire-prone areas, SCE may call a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) event. During these events, power is proactively turned off in high fire risk areas to reduce the threat of wildfires.
Qualifying customers may have most installation costs covered, allowing your home to be prepared for the unexpected without significant out-of-pocket costs. Your battery automatically switches on when the grid goes down, keeping your home powered.

Energy storage systems help keep your home powered during outages and can reduce your electric bills. Qualifying customers may have most installation costs covered through available incentives. See below which programs are available.
Your energy storage system will charge either from the grid or solar while it is not in use. The amount of stored power depends on your home's energy usage and system size. This stored energy keeps your home powered during outages or PSPS events. You can also take advantage of Time-Of-Use rates by charging when rates are lower.
The Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP) and other programs provide financial incentives for home battery storage systems. Programs are available for high fire-risk areas, income-qualified households, and customers who have experienced PSPS events. You don't need solar to qualify - energy storage works with or without solar panels.

Everything you need to know about home energy storage in Southern California
To receive an SGIP incentive, you must be an SCE customer. Eligibility varies based on customer type, income qualifications, and the location of your project site. Programs are available for high fire-risk areas (Tier 2 & Tier 3), income-qualified households, and customers who have experienced PSPS events. Our eligibility check will help determine which programs you qualify for.
No, you do not need to have solar to qualify for energy storage programs. Energy storage allows for self-supply during outages for added resiliency. Your battery can charge from the grid when electricity prices are lower, or from solar if you have it. If your main electrical panel is configured to only have critical load (e.g., a few lights, refrigerator, A/C) on, your energy storage system will last longer during outages.
Charging: You can store power from either your rooftop solar system or from the grid when electricity prices are lower. If an outage
is imminent due to a storm or shutoff event, some storage providers can send a signal to your battery to fully charge ahead of time.
Discharging: You can use the energy stored by your battery to power your home when the price of electricity from the grid is more expensive,
at night when your solar system isn't producing (if you have solar), or during an outage when you need backup power.
When there are potentially dangerous weather conditions in fire-prone areas, SCE may need to call a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) event. During these events, power is proactively turned off in high fire risk areas to reduce the threat of wildfires. Turning off power is not something SCE takes lightly, but PSPS events help ensure the safety of the public, customers, and employees.
